Empty Nester Saves $1,100 Monthly After Urgent Downsizing Move
UPDATE: A recent move by empty nester Kelly Magyarics highlights the urgent trend of downsizing among single parents facing life transitions. After five years of co-parenting and with both children pursuing their own paths—one starting college and the other preparing for a move—Magyarics made the pivotal decision to relocate to a smaller, more affordable apartment.
Her previous three-bedroom unit saw rent escalate by a staggering $1,000 during her stay, prompting a thorough reevaluation of her living situation. With a 21-year-old child living with their father and an 18-year-old embarking on a college journey three and a half hours away, the time for change was now.
Magyarics’ quest for a new apartment came with strict deal-breakers. The new space had to be on the top floor for peace and quiet, include a spare bedroom for visiting children and a home office, and feature a balcony for outdoor enjoyment. She emphasized the importance of positive reviews from current and former residents in her search.
In a move reminiscent of the Marie Kondo method, she purged her belongings, donating over 25 bags of items, further motivating her to embrace a more minimalist lifestyle. Ultimately, she secured a top-floor unit in a garden-style complex, which, though requiring her to climb three flights of stairs, offers the tranquility and space she craved.
Despite opting for a non-renovated apartment to save approximately $1,100 monthly, Magyarics faced compromises. The kitchen lacked modern appliances and storage, forcing her to get creative with organization. Yet, she relishes the peace of her new living arrangement, free from noisy neighbors, and enjoys serene views from her balcony overlooking trees and a water feature.
The transition to this new home has not been without challenges. Although only 20 minutes away, the area feels unfamiliar. While she still enjoys her favorite pho restaurant nearby, it doesn’t hold the same charm as her previous neighborhood. However, the convenience of a Trader Joe’s just down the street has quickly become a highlight.
Magyarics’ move serves as a powerful reminder of the emotional and practical aspects of downsizing, especially for those navigating significant life changes. As she continues to adjust, she plans to further declutter her belongings, particularly in the spare bedroom closet.
She looks forward to warmer months when she can enjoy her balcony and explore the nearby lifestyle center. With plans to potentially relocate to Europe in the future to be with her long-distance boyfriend, she understands that this is just a temporary home. For now, it represents a fresh start and a significant step toward embracing her new life as an empty nester.
