East Harlem Hosts Vibrant Three Kings’ Day Parade Today
UPDATE: East Harlem is alive with celebration as the community kicks off the 48th annual Three Kings’ Day Parade today, January 6, 2024. This vibrant event, organized by El Museo del Barrio, features music, live animals, and participation from 2,000 local students, marking a significant moment in the Latin cultural calendar.
Three Kings’ Day, also known as Epiphany, honors the Biblical story of the three wise men who brought gifts to the newborn Jesus. Celebrated on the 12th night after Christmas, this holiday involves exchanging gifts, enjoying king cake, and fostering community spirit. The parade is a crucial platform for Latino New Yorkers to preserve and share their rich traditions with the broader community.
Pamela Hernández Hower, the director of marketing and communications at El Museo del Barrio, stated,
“It’s a beautiful tradition that we want to ensure future generations can know about and celebrate.”
This sentiment resonates throughout the parade, which is not just a celebration for the Latino community but a vibrant invitation for everyone to partake in the festivities.
Parade participants include local schools, the NYC Civic Engagement Commission, and community groups such as Batalá New York, an all-women, Black-led percussion ensemble renowned for teaching Afro-Brazilian drumming. Cynthia Carr-Johnson, a leader of Batalá New York, emphasized the ensemble’s inclusivity, stating,
“Some of them are playing an instrument for the first time.”
This year’s parade honors notable figures including New York City Councilwoman Diana Ayala, Univision anchor Jonathan Inoa, and the late Latin jazz pioneer Eddie Palmieri, underscoring the importance of cultural legacy and community pride.
El Museo del Barrio is also showcasing two exhibitions with a pay-what-you-can entry, making art and culture accessible to all. The parade not only celebrates heritage but also reaffirms the role of the arts in community cohesion.
As East Harlem pulses with excitement today, the Three Kings’ Day Parade stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Latino culture and the importance of sharing these traditions with a diverse audience.
Stay tuned for more updates on this colorful celebration, and remember to join in the festivities if you’re in the area!
