E-40’s Annual Toy Drive Delivers 100 Bikes, Drones to Kids
UPDATE: E-40’s third annual toy drive took place at Shiloh Community Church in Vallejo on December 16, 2023, delivering joy and gifts to local children. Although the popular rapper, Earl Stevens, was not present, his impact was felt as the event provided 100 bikes, 100 scooters, and 100 drones to eager kids in the community.
This year’s drive was more than just a toy distribution; it transformed into a community celebration featuring music, food, and engaging activities. Event coordinator Annette Vaughn expressed her excitement, stating, “My adrenaline was way up this morning,” as she and her team prepared for the influx of families. With over 50 garbage bags filled with toys, their hard work culminated in a significant gift to children, including stuffed animals for Oakland Children’s Hospital.
The event drew a massive crowd, building on last year’s attendance of over 2,000 people. This year’s turnout was bolstered by the support of local organizations like the Vallejo Project and local officials, including Vallejo City Councilmember Helen Marie-Gordon. “It’s so great to see the smile on children’s faces,” Annette remarked, highlighting the emotional impact of the event.
Pastor Rance Vaughn, who fondly recalls E-40 as a vibrant young boy in the church, noted, “He was always very full of life here.” The sense of nostalgia was palpable as he reflected on E-40’s early days, saying, “You never saw him mad at anything.” This connection to the community was evident throughout the day as volunteers and supporters rallied together.
Local artist Nef the Pharaoh also contributed to the festive atmosphere, entertaining attendees while eight food vendors ensured no one left hungry. The community spirit was alive and well, making the toy drive a significant highlight of the season.
Looking ahead, organizers are already discussing plans for next year’s event, with hopes of expanding further to include even more activities and support for local families. As the day wrapped up, Rance joyfully stated, “Job accomplished,” reflecting the collective effort that made the event a success.
The annual toy drive not only honors E-40’s roots but also reinforces the importance of giving back to the community. For many families, this event is a beacon of hope and joy during the holiday season, illustrating the profound impact of community support and the legacy of a local hero.
