Amid the festivities, Adam Gaul, a dedicated 17-year-old from Farley, Iowa, took a moment from his duties cleaning the barn to reflect on the fair’s significance. “It’s fun – it’s a great social gathering,” Gaul said. “You can eat ice cream, show your animal and talk to people you haven’t seen in a year.” His words echo the sentiments of many who have made this event a cherished annual tradition.
Among the participants, Hannah Gobeli, 13, from Monticello, Iowa, faced her own challenges today as she prepared to showcase her heifer, Alexa. “I’m excited and nervous,” she expressed, moments before the highly anticipated open class beef show. Hannah’s mother, Kris Gobeli, detailed the extensive preparation that goes into showing animals, emphasizing the growth in her daughter’s confidence and work ethic. “It’s very rewarding,” Kris stated, highlighting the benefits of hard work and dedication.
In the cool atmosphere of the Creative Arts building, fair board member Mike Lambert showcased a variety of impressive youth and adult creations. “We have adult and youth activities here—everything from canning to cooking, photography, and fine arts,” Lambert noted, as he highlighted the creativity on display, including stunning quilts and award-winning food preservation efforts.
Lambert, who has participated in the fair for over 20 years, is passionate about preserving traditional crafts. “We’re trying to keep that alive,” he said, referring to the dwindling practice of sewing and crafting.
