Dodgers’ Max Muncy Hits IL with Oblique Strain, Major Loss

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers face a significant setback as third baseman Max Muncy has been placed on the injured list due to a Grade 1 oblique strain, confirmed just moments ago. This injury comes at a critical time as the team is struggling in the standings, now trailing the San Diego Padres by one game in the National League West race.
Muncy, who was a late scratch from the lineup on Wednesday after experiencing discomfort in his right side during batting practice, was initially expected to recover quickly. However, he will now miss this weekend’s crucial series at Dodger Stadium and next weekend’s matchup at Petco Park in San Diego.
Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts provided an urgent update, stating, “I don’t think anyone expects it to be season-ending, but hopefully it’s sooner than later.” Muncy’s absence is a devastating blow as he has been a key contributor, hitting .312 with 11 home runs over the past 41 games before his latest injury.
The reigning World Series champions have seen their fortunes shift dramatically, holding a nine-game lead in the NL West as of July 3 but plummeting to a 12-21 record since then. The Padres arrive in Los Angeles riding a five-game winning streak, further intensifying the urgency for the Dodgers to turn their performance around.
In Muncy’s stead, the Dodgers will rely on rookie Alex Freeland, who is batting .176 in his first 12 games, and journeyman Buddy Kennedy, with a career average of .193. The Dodgers are also grappling with injuries to several key players, maintaining a long list of high-leverage relievers on the injured list. However, there is hope as some, including Michael Kopech, Kirby Yates, and Tanner Scott, are nearing returns.
Roberts expressed the challenge of replacing Muncy’s impact, saying, “It’s certainly a tough loss. It’s hard to kind of backfill Max, what he means, as far as the plate discipline, the slug, the on-base, all that stuff.”
The Dodgers’ offensive struggles have been exacerbated in recent weeks, ranking 22nd in the majors with a .708 OPS. With Muncy sidelined, the urgency for other players to step up is critical as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
Baseball fans will be watching closely as the Dodgers aim to rebound without one of their most powerful hitters. The next series against the Padres is a must-watch as the team tries to regain momentum in a tightly contested division.
