UPDATE: A Detroit woman narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation thanks to a recent upgrade from the Detroit Solar Neighborhoods Program. In an emotional revelation on Thursday, Dorothy Gladney shared how a newly installed carbon monoxide detector alerted her just in time, potentially saving her life and the lives of her family.

The incident unfolded in Gladney’s home in the Van Dyke-Lynch neighborhood after the city installed various improvements, including the crucial detector. “I can look at the fireman’s face and I knew we wouldn’t have been here,” Gladney stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Just days after installation, the detector went off while she was cooking, prompting a swift response from firefighters who identified the source of the carbon monoxide as her stove.

Gladney, who has lived in Detroit for more than 40 years, expressed immense gratitude towards the program and invited Mayor Mike Duggan to her home to share her story. “God was watching out for you,” Duggan told her, to which she replied, “All the time, all the time.” This heartfelt exchange highlights the human impact of the solar initiative.

The Detroit Solar Neighborhoods Program aims to transform previously blighted land into solar energy farms while providing essential home improvements to local residents. As part of the initiative, three solar farms are being constructed to power 127 city buildings, directly benefiting neighborhoods like Gladney’s.

City officials report that the program’s thorough assessments are crucial for identifying the specific needs of households. “They did a thorough walk-through to assess what her needs were, and they noticed that’s something she could add, and she agreed, and that’s what led to saving her life,” said Kayana Sessoms, District 3 Department of Neighborhoods manager.

Gladney remains thankful for the program that not only enhances her home but also provided her with a vital safety device. “It’s a blessing and it’s still a blessing,” she remarked.

This urgent story serves as a reminder of the life-saving potential of community programs and the importance of home safety measures. Stay tuned for further updates on the Detroit Solar Neighborhoods Program and its impact on local families.
