Democrats Rally in Cullman for Braswell Ahead of Special Election

URGENT UPDATE: Over 80 attendees gathered for a pivotal town hall in Cullman County, Alabama, on July 30, 2025, featuring Democratic nominee Alex Braswell and former U.S. Senator Doug Jones. This event marks a critical moment as Braswell prepares for the upcoming special election for House District 11 against Republican nominee Heath Allbright on August 26.
With a focus on pressing issues such as Medicaid expansion, mental health, and gun violence, both leaders highlighted the importance of community engagement in shaping local politics. Jones emphasized the need for Braswell to maintain her connection with voters, stating, “When she gets elected, she needs to do things like this on a regular basis.” He urged her to reach out to the entire community, not just familiar faces.
The atmosphere was charged with both optimism and realism, as attendees acknowledged the challenges Democrats face in a traditionally Republican stronghold. One participant expressed a desire for encouragement, citing a perceived “lack of empathy” within the current Republican Party. Braswell responded passionately, asserting, “I think Cullman’s superpower is that there are more Democrats here than you think.” She aims to foster a sense of belonging among residents, declaring, “You are not alone. There is a place for you here.”
Cullman County Democratic Party chair Ricky Browning reinforced this message, revealing that despite the overwhelming majority of Republican votes in recent elections, there remains a significant opportunity for Democrats. “In the last election, only 89% voted for Donald Trump, which leaves 11% seeking other options,” Browning stated.
Jones, who has endorsed Braswell, reflected on the potential for a Democratic resurgence, recalling his own victory against Roy Moore in 2017. He stated, “This is a special election, which means there’s a special and unique opportunity to send a message to folks that the status quo is not always right.”
Despite financial challenges—Allbright has raised nearly ten times more in campaign donations—Braswell is innovating her approach by leveraging social media to connect with younger voters. “We rattle their cage. Every time we are left out, we let them know we are here,” Braswell asserted, emphasizing her commitment to inclusivity and dialogue.
As the campaign heats up, both Braswell and Jones are focused on mobilizing Democratic supporters and increasing voter registration. “At one point, we had about 3.7 million registered voters, but 20% have never voted,” Jones noted, stressing the need for greater turnout.
With the election just weeks away, all eyes will be on Cullman County as Braswell aims to harness the momentum generated by her campaign and the support of party leaders like Jones. As the stakes rise, the community’s engagement will be crucial in determining the outcome of this special election.
