UPDATE: The Cincinnati Reds are on the brink of securing a postseason spot after a thrilling 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on September 30, 2023. This win puts the Reds just one game away from clinching the National League’s final wild-card playoff position, marking their first postseason appearance since 2020.

The Reds can earn that coveted wild-card berth if they defeat the Brewers again on Sunday or if the New York Mets lose to the Miami Marlins. A loss for Cincinnati combined with a Mets win would eliminate the Reds and send New York to the playoffs instead. Both teams currently hold records of 83-78, but the Reds possess the tiebreaker after winning four out of six matchups against the Mets this season.

The Brewers, who secured the best regular-season record in Major League Baseball, including home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, were unable to contain the Reds’ offense. Cincinnati broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, scoring a staggering six runs with a combination of four hits, two errors, and two walks.

Sal Stewart led the charge with a home run and an RBI single, while Miguel Andujar went 3-for-5, showcasing a powerful performance that energized the Reds’ lineup. The inning began with a throwing error from Brewers starter Robert Gasser, allowing Noelvi Marte to reach base. Andujar’s double advanced Marte, who then scored on Stewart’s single.

“We are focused and determined to clinch this wild card,” said Reds manager David Bell after the game.

In a crucial moment, Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski made his major league debut with the bases loaded and two outs. He faced Ke’Bryan Hayes, who responded with an infield single on an 0-2 pitch, followed by walks to Matt McLain and a two-run single from TJ Friedl. Misiorowski’s inexperience was evident, as he allowed a throwing error from left fielder Isaac Collins, which further compounded the Reds’ lead.

On the mound, Reds starter Andrew Abbott delivered a solid performance, allowing three runs over 5 1/3 innings. Emilio Pagan, pitching for the fourth consecutive day, secured his 32nd save in 38 opportunities, retiring the side in order during the ninth inning. Pagan’s remarkable feat marks him as only the second player this season to pitch on four straight days.

As the final weekend of the MLB season unfolds, all eyes will be on the Reds and their quest for the playoffs. Fans are eagerly anticipating the outcome of Sunday’s crucial matchups, which could determine Cincinnati’s postseason fate.

Stay tuned for the latest updates as this story develops, and get ready for a thrilling finish to the regular season!
