UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced a staggering 297 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) during the recent Christmas holiday enforcement period, despite facing severe winter storms across the state. The enforcement effort, which ran from December 24 to January 1, saw officers navigating treacherous conditions including snow, flooding, and mudslides as they worked to ensure road safety.

During this critical period, CHP officers executed 5,450 enforcement actions statewide, which included issuing 2,744 citations. The most alarming trend was the 1,385 speeding citations issued, with 94 drivers clocked at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Tragically, the heightened enforcement coincided with six fatal crashes in CHP jurisdictions, resulting in eight lives lost.

Authorities emphasize that excessive speed, impaired driving, and not wearing seat belts are leading contributors to these serious incidents. “Seat belts save lives — every seat, every trip,” the CHP urged in a statement. They are calling on all motorists to practice safe driving habits, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

As the new year approaches, the CHP is extending its vigilance with an upcoming New Year’s Holiday Enforcement Period slated from 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, to 11:59 p.m. Thursday, January 1. Increased patrols will be deployed statewide to combat impaired driving and ensure public safety.

CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee reiterated the importance of responsible driving as they head into 2026, stating, “Driving under the influence increases the risks on our roads, raises the chance of a crash, and puts lives in danger.”

In last year’s New Year’s enforcement period, the CHP reported 10 fatal crashes alongside 481 DUI arrests statewide, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance. The agency reminds drivers to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, utilizing ride-share services, or taking public transportation. They are also encouraging the public to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.

Stay safe and responsible as the holidays continue, and help keep our roads secure for everyone.
