New reports confirm that the fate of Dean Archer, a character on Chicago Med, was very different during the show’s early planning stages. In a shocking revelation, actor Steven Weber disclosed that the creators intended to kill off Archer just a few episodes into Season 6, following his debut.

During an appearance on the latest episode of the One Chicago Podcast, Weber shared that the original storyline for Archer was dark and troubling. The character, a Naval surgeon with a traumatic past from Afghanistan, was initially slated to face a tragic end due to untreated PTSD and self-destructive behavior. “The character was a guy who was a Naval surgeon, who had been to Afghanistan, had been wounded, had PTSD, and, in fact, at the end of this arc, was going to do some self-harm,” Weber revealed.

Weber emphasized the character’s mental struggles, saying, “He was not good up here. He was suffering and had untreated trauma.” This intense depiction was meant to culminate in Archer’s demise, which Weber described as “really dark.” He characterized Archer’s behavior as bordering on that of a “sociopath,” leading to the decision to end his story prematurely.

However, in a twist of fate, the creative team recognized Archer’s potential and decided against killing him off. “Halfway through [the initial arc], I think they decided that this character had more depth and appeal and possibilities beyond where they were gonna take him,” Weber explained. This change allowed Archer to grow into a crucial member of the long-running medical drama.

The shift in narrative not only saved the character’s life but also opened up new storylines that resonated with audiences. Since then, Archer has become an integral part of Chicago Med, captivating viewers with his complex character arc.

As fans eagerly await the next episodes, this development raises questions about how the show’s writers will continue to evolve Archer’s character in future seasons. Will they delve deeper into his past trauma, or will they explore new challenges? Stay tuned for more updates on Chicago Med and its compelling storytelling.

With these revelations, Weber’s comments are generating buzz among fans and critics alike, making this a must-share topic for any Chicago Med enthusiast.
