UPDATE: Camarillo High School’s senior running back Shane Feller delivered an electrifying performance, leading his team to a 22-14 victory over Rio Mesa in the highly anticipated 51st Black and Blue rivalry matchup on August 29, 2023. Feller rushed for an impressive 210 yards on 32 carries, scoring two touchdowns and a crucial two-point conversion.

This victory marks a significant turning point for Camarillo, snapping a four-game losing streak against their longtime rivals. Feller expressed his determination, stating, “I have just got to run aggressive. I always have, always will.” His relentless style of play posed a continuous challenge for the Rio Mesa defense throughout the game.

The Scorpions faced an early setback when they fumbled the ball on their own 25-yard line, allowing Rio Mesa’s Juan Munoz to score first with a 1-yard touchdown. However, Camarillo quickly recovered, orchestrating a 16-play drive that culminated in a touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Dylan Nicholson, tying the game at 6-6.

Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter, with a blocked punt from Rio Mesa and an interception from Nicholson. Yet, the Scorpions regained their momentum, marching down the field to score again, with Feller converting a two-point attempt to make it 14-6. Rio Mesa countered just before halftime, tying the game at 14-14 after a goal-line keeper by quarterback Alec Fontyn.

The second half proved pivotal. Rio Mesa’s promising drive stalled at the Camarillo 25-yard line, failing to capitalize on an earlier momentum shift. “To come away with no points, that hurt,” said Rio Mesa head coach Jim Bittner. Meanwhile, Camarillo took control with a touchdown and a safety, pushing the score to 22-14.

Camarillo’s defense sealed the game with a spectacular interception by defensive back Carson Machado, showcasing the team’s determination. Machado noted, “I saw the quarterback — right when he looked, I knew that was where he was going to throw.”

With this victory, Camarillo not only secured their first win of the season but also demonstrated their resilience and teamwork. Coach Nate Anderson praised his players, stating, “They battled, they competed.”

Looking ahead, Camarillo (1-1) will face Saugus this Friday at College of the Canyons, while Rio Mesa (0-2) prepares to host Ventura. The excitement continues as both teams aim to improve and showcase their skills in upcoming matchups.
