UPDATE: In a heartfelt ceremony on September 30, 2023, Bruce Stainbrook was awarded the prestigious Friend of the Fair recognition during the 2025 Crawford County Fair in West Mead Township. This award, presented by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, honors Stainbrook’s invaluable contributions to the fair and the community.

As the event unfolded at the Youth Show Arena, Stainbrook’s granddaughter, 5-year-old Sienna Stainbrook, playfully urged him to join the other royalty in line, reflecting the family pride in his achievements. Although he did not participate in the pageant, his dedication to the fair is what truly makes him a winner in the eyes of the community.

Crawford County Fair Board President Dean Maynard praised Stainbrook, saying, “This year’s award unanimously goes to another person who brings to the fair things that we can’t do by ourselves.” He highlighted Stainbrook’s unwavering support, stating, “He is there whenever we need him, asking the right questions, and, most importantly, asking, ‘How can I help?’”

The award was presented by Darrin Youker, policy director for the Department of Agriculture, who noted Stainbrook’s extensive knowledge about the fair and his role in spearheading essential improvements. “We want to recognize an individual who’s been described as the guy who knows everything about the fair,” Youker said, emphasizing Stainbrook’s impact on making the venue a vibrant community hub.

Further honoring Stainbrook, State Representative Brad Roae presented him with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Roae remarked, “This fair does not happen without volunteers. 4-H does not happen; nothing like this happens unless it’s people like you.”

The Friend of the Fair Award is exclusively given to volunteers, and Fair Board members are not eligible. Stainbrook reflected on his family’s legacy at the fair, recalling how his father and grandfather helped establish the popular draft horse department and horse pull events that drew crowds of up to 6,000 spectators.

Stainbrook expressed his deep commitment to the fair, stating, “The main reason I do this is because of the kids and because of agriculture. Agriculture is the backbone of this country.” He highlighted the important life lessons that young 4-H members and exhibitors learn through their involvement, saying, “These young 4-Hers and young exhibitors that raise animals learn an awful lot about life, and it’s something they take with them forever.”

The recognition of Bruce Stainbrook is a testament to the vital role volunteers play in sustaining community events. As the fair continues, his legacy of dedication and service will undoubtedly inspire future generations.

Stay tuned for further updates on the 2025 Crawford County Fair as it unfolds, showcasing the hard work and spirit of the community.
