UPDATE: The shooting tragedy at Brown University has claimed the life of Ella Cook, a student and cherished member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama. The devastating news was confirmed by Rev. Craig Smalley during Sunday morning services, where he described Cook as “incredibly grounded and generous” and a “bright light” in her community.

The shooting unfolded on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at approximately 4:05 PM, when authorities received reports of an active shooter near the university’s engineering building. This brazen attack left two people dead, including Cook, and injured nine others, sending shockwaves across the campus and the nation.

Rev. Smalley expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Many of you heard about the tragedy… And sadly, tragically, one of those people is one of our parishioners.” He emphasized Cook’s active role in the church and the profound impact she had on those around her, both at Brown and within the parish community.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Brown University President Christina H. Paxson addressed the community, calling it “a deeply tragic day for Brown, our families, and our local community.” She expressed heartfelt condolences, saying, “There are truly no words that can express the deep sorrow we are feeling for the victims of the shooting.”

Authorities confirm that the gunman fled the scene immediately after the attack. However, a person of interest has been detained at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island. This individual’s name has not yet been released, and as of now, no charges have been filed. The police have not provided insight into a potential motive for the shooting.

As the investigation continues, officials urge anyone with information to come forward. The community grieves the loss of Ella Cook, a young woman who embodied kindness and generosity, leaving behind a legacy of love and service.

The situation remains fluid, with updates expected as authorities work to ensure safety and uncover the motives behind this shocking act. The university community and beyond are left to grapple with the profound implications of this tragedy, highlighting the urgent need for discussions surrounding campus safety and gun violence.

Stay tuned for further developments.
