Broncos Place DT Malcolm Roach on IR, Promote QB Sam Ehlinger

UPDATE: The Denver Broncos have officially placed defensive tackle Malcolm Roach on injured reserve, confirming he will miss at least the first four games of the season. This announcement comes just one day before the Broncos’ opener against the Tennessee Titans on September 10, 2023. Roach sustained a Grade 2 calf strain during practice on Thursday, leading to his immediate exclusion from the game.
Dr. Kenton Fibel, a primary care sports medicine specialist at Cedars-Sinai Orthopedics, indicated earlier this week that recovery from such an injury typically requires “several weeks.” This loss significantly impacts the Broncos’ defensive line, with players Jordan Jackson and Eyioma Uwazurike expected to see increased playing time in Roach’s absence.
In a strategic move, the Broncos have filled Roach’s roster spot by promoting quarterback Sam Ehlinger from the practice squad. Ehlinger, a former standout at the University of Texas and briefly with the Indianapolis Colts, was one of the last cuts during preseason but was quickly re-signed by Denver due to his potential.
Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb praised Ehlinger’s abilities, stating, “If somebody just spent a little more time mechanically with him, the best is yet to come.” With Ehlinger now on the active roster, he will serve as an emergency third quarterback during game days, allowing the Broncos to keep their player count intact.
Additionally, the Broncos are elevating fullback Adam Prentice and inside linebacker Levelle Bailey from the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s matchup. This move provides crucial depth, especially with ILB Dre Greenlaw ruled out due to a quad injury.
As the Broncos gear up for their season opener, fans are eager to see how these changes will impact the team’s performance. With a focus on resilience and strategic adjustments, the Broncos aim to kick off their season on a strong note despite these setbacks.
Stay tuned for updates on the Broncos as they face off against the Titans and adapt to their evolving roster.
