Brentwood Dominates SGA in 38-6 State Championship Showdown
URGENT UPDATE: The Brentwood War Eagles clinched the GIAA AA state championship with a decisive 38-6 victory over the Southwest Georgia Academy Warriors in Macon this afternoon. Despite a strong defensive effort in the first half, SGA was overwhelmed by Brentwood’s relentless offense after halftime.
In a game that showcased intense competition and momentum shifts, SGA initially held Brentwood to just a field goal. However, after a critical interception just before halftime, Brentwood extended their lead to 10-0. The momentum clearly shifted, leaving SGA struggling to recover.
SGA’s head coach, Kerry Morris, expressed his disappointment: “You know as well as I do, it’s momentum. We’re going in at the half, I’m thinking we’re down three and about making adjustments. (Then) it changes.” This shift proved pivotal as the War Eagles found their rhythm in the second half.
Brentwood’s quarterback, Baylor Cobb, led the charge, scoring a touchdown early in the third quarter to widen the gap to 17-0. SGA’s offense struggled to gain traction, with Colt Williams providing only sporadic successes against a tough Brentwood defense.
Less than a minute after Cobb’s touchdown, SGA’s offense faltered again, resulting in another interception that set up a quick score by Tristan Robinson, pushing Brentwood ahead to 24-0.
As the game progressed, the Warriors’ defense began to tire, allowing Brentwood to score additional touchdowns, ultimately sealing SGA’s fate. Morris remained proud of his team, stating, “I’m proud of them youngins I got. I won’t trade them for anybody or any amount of money.” His commitment to the program remains strong as he looks forward to next season.
SGA did manage a late touchdown, but it was too little too late, as the scoreboard read 38-6 by the final whistle. The Warriors will be left reflecting on missed opportunities and what could have been.
This championship game not only showcased the talent of both teams but also the resilience and determination of the young athletes involved. As the dust settles in Macon, all eyes will be on how both programs advance from this pivotal moment.
