**BREAKING: Suspect Arrested in Stabbing on Charlotte Light Rail**
UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested following a serious stabbing incident on Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line, just months after the fatal stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee on the same route. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to the scene near the light rail station at 25th Street and North Brevard Street around 4:50 PM today, October 27, 2023.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was rushed to a local hospital and is currently in critical but stable condition. Police apprehended the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Oscar Solarzano, shortly after the attack. According to the arrest warrant, Solarzano allegedly used a “large fixed blade knife” to assault the victim. Witnesses reported that he appeared intoxicated and challenged the victim to a fight while behaving disruptively.
Solarzano is facing multiple serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, and carrying a concealed weapon. Court records indicate that he has been previously deported and is currently being held without bond, with a court appearance scheduled for Monday.
The incident occurs just two days after the city launched a new safety initiative called Operation Safe Season, aimed at increasing police presence and enforcement in areas plagued by violence. Newly sworn-in Chief of Police, Estella Patterson, is already implementing heightened security measures across Charlotte.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein expressed his concern over the violent incident, stating on social media, “I just spoke with Chief Patterson about the horrific stabbing on the light rail this evening. Please join me in praying for the full recovery of the victim.” He emphasized gratitude for the ongoing law enforcement efforts in response to rising crime.
This stabbing incident recalls the tragic death of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, who was fatally stabbed on the same light rail line in August. That case highlighted concerns about safety and crime in urban areas. The alleged murderer, Decarlos Brown, has a history of violent offenses and is awaiting trial.
In the wake of these incidents, ridership on the LYNX Blue Line has dropped significantly, with a reported decline of more than 10% in September compared to last year. Federal Transit Administration statistics indicate an 8% decline in light rail ridership in October, as safety concerns continue to mount.
The Charlotte Area Transit System has recently implemented updated safety protocols, and security contractor Professional Security Services has fully staffed the Blue Line with the assistance of 24 off-duty CMPD officers.
As the investigation continues, officials urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. This developing story highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in public transit systems across the region.
