UPDATE: Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty is actively campaigning for Colorado’s attorney general, making a pivotal stop in Durango this week. His visit, part of the summer “Know Your Rights” tour, featured a seminar addressing critical issues like hate crimes and gun laws. The event unfolded at the Durango Public Library on Wednesday, drawing significant local interest.

Dougherty, who played a key role in the 2021 Mark Redwine murder case, emphasized the importance of connecting with Coloradans about their rights and safety. “It’s essential that we engage directly with communities,” he stated during the event. “I want to be the people’s lawyer.”

If elected, Dougherty has outlined three major priorities: challenging unlawful federal actions affecting Coloradans, enhancing public safety, and improving environmental protections. He expressed deep concern over federal plans to sell off public lands, stating, “It’s outrageous that the federal government would consider selling off our public lands, including lands here in Colorado.”

Dougherty also highlighted the urgency of addressing the Colorado River Compact‘s Interim Guidelines and Drought Contingency Plans, which are set to expire in 2026. “We need solutions that prioritize the interests of Coloradans,” he said. He criticized current federal rollbacks of the Environmental Protection Agency, insisting, “Now, more than ever, we need the state to step up and hold water polluters accountable.”

The Boulder DA also stressed the need for rural voices to be heard in state legislation. “People outside the metro area feel slighted, and that has to change,” Dougherty asserted. He promised to foster a bipartisan environment within the attorney general’s office, emphasizing the importance of trust between the public and state government.

“You should always judge me on my actions,” Dougherty told attendees, urging them to hold him accountable. His commitment to local communities aims to ensure that decisions reflect the needs and concerns of all Coloradans, not just those in urban areas.

As Dougherty continues his campaign, he is set to visit other communities across Colorado, engaging with voters and outlining his vision for a safer, more inclusive state. His focus on transparency and accountability positions him as a candidate dedicated to rebuilding trust in the legal system and ensuring that every Coloradan’s voice is heard.

Stay tuned for more updates as Dougherty’s campaign progresses and additional events are announced.
