UPDATE: The Boca Grande History Center has officially unveiled its new location and exhibits, marking a significant milestone for the community. Former Historical Society President Pam Heilman expressed her deep emotions upon entering the new space at Crowninshield Community House, stating she “walked in quietly and I cried.” This transformative project comes after years of limited space at their previous location behind Boca Bargains.

The new Footprints from the Past Exhibition offers a modern, engaging experience for visitors, featuring an interactive map of the island. The center previewed its exhibits during a special test run on October 17, 2023, with plans for a series of openings leading up to the grand opening next week.

The exhibition was designed by Creative Arts Unlimited, a firm known for its work with historical venues and major retailers. CEO Chuck Stanmore emphasized the importance of storytelling in the exhibits, stating, “You are trying to put out things that people will walk up and buy. We are storytellers. We need to know what the story is.”

The collaborative effort involved BGHS staff and volunteers, who played a vital role in selecting the photographs and narratives for the exhibits. According to Johns Knight, current BGHS President, the firm’s dedication to understanding Boca Grande’s unique history set Creative Arts apart during the selection process. “They wanted to make a personal visit to see Boca Grande and the situation,” Knight noted.

Despite setbacks caused by hurricanes, the project was completed in just over a year, showcasing the resilience and commitment of the community. The firm stored exhibit pieces during the recovery period, ensuring they were ready for installation once conditions improved.

The new center promises to be a cultural hub for Boca Grande, offering residents and visitors a chance to connect with the island’s rich history. “The island deserves this,” Heilman declared. The grand opening is eagerly anticipated, and details will be released shortly.

Stay tuned for further updates on the grand opening and upcoming events at the Boca Grande History Center, as this exciting new chapter unfolds for the island community.
