The game shifted dramatically after halftime, with the Panthers leading a strong charge that saw them score 11 of the first 13 points in the third quarter. Ella Lum, a sophomore guard, was the standout player, netting a game-high 25 points, including 14 points in the second half. “I think the difference there was energy,” Lum stated, emphasizing her team’s improved performance post-halftime.
Despite the defeat, Charlie Cook, a sophomore for the Bulldogs, delivered an impressive performance with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Cook was particularly effective at the free-throw line, hitting 10 of 11 attempts.
The first half was tightly contested, with Vacaville briefly leading 7-6 after a three-point play by Cook. The Panthers managed to hold Vacaville scoreless during the second quarter while still maintaining a slim lead of 24-16 at halftime.
Benicia’s coach, Corey Ott, praised his team’s defensive adjustments, stating, “(Vacaville) shot 27 free throws. That was a point of emphasis in the second half as we went to straight man-to-man defense.” His coaching staff added a festive touch by wearing ugly Christmas sweaters for the game.
The Panthers’ momentum continued into the fourth quarter, ballooning their lead to 46-27. With the victory secured, Benicia wraps up their year with a strong note, preparing for a challenging Diablo Athletic League matchup against Northgate on January 6, 2025.
Meanwhile, Vacaville will look to bounce back in their next game against West Park on December 29, 2025, before starting their league play against rival Will C. Wood on January 9, 2025. The battle is crucial for both teams as they seek to gain traction in their respective leagues.
