UPDATE: Avery boys soccer faced a challenging week, dropping all three of their matches in a series of intense contests. The team played against Madison, Owen, and North Wilkes, with the first match bringing a heart-stopping finish.

On Monday, Sept. 15, Avery hosted Madison in a high-scoring showdown that required overtime to determine the victor. After a thrilling back-and-forth, Madison clinched a 4-3 victory with a decisive overtime goal by senior Charlie Bender in the 94th minute. The match was a nail-biter, featuring multiple lead changes and standout performances.

Fernando Monzon opened the scoring for Madison in the 10th minute, but Avery quickly responded with a goal from junior Axel Pahua in the 24th minute. The teams exchanged goals throughout the match, with Avery briefly taking a 3-2 lead thanks to a strike from Wyatt Silver. However, Madison equalized again before the end of regulation, forcing extra time where they ultimately triumphed.

Just two days later, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, Avery faced a formidable opponent in Owen during a Western Highlands Conference match. Owen dominated the game, scoring an astonishing nine goals in the first half, triggering the mercy rule and ending the match prematurely. This loss highlighted the challenges Avery faced against top-tier teams this week.

On Saturday, Sept. 19, Avery returned to MacDonald Stadium for a non-conference clash against North Wilkes. Despite a spirited effort, they fell short with a final score of 4-2, marking a tough week for the team.

Looking ahead, Avery is set to regroup and refocus as they prepare for upcoming matches against Mountain Heritage on Wednesday, Sept. 24, and NC School of Science and Math-Morganton on Thursday, Sept. 25. Fans and players alike are hopeful for a turnaround in fortunes as they continue their season.

Stay tuned for updates on Avery boys soccer as they aim to bounce back from this challenging week.
