Avalanche Fall 4-2 to Lightning, Suffer Back-to-Back Losses
UPDATE: The Colorado Avalanche faced a disappointing loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning, falling 4-2 on January 9, 2024, marking their second consecutive defeat in regulation for the first time this season. The game took place at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida.
In a crucial moment, Brandon Hagel scored a one-timer at 8:31 of the third period, propelling the Lightning ahead and sealing the victory. Anthony Cirelli added an empty-net goal with just 1:25 remaining, amplifying the Avalanche’s woes.
This loss comes just two nights after Colorado dropped a tight 2-1 game to the Florida Panthers, further intensifying the pressure on a team missing key players. The Avalanche (31-4-7) now finds themselves needing to regroup during an upcoming homestand after enduring their first real adversity of the season.
The team struggled as they faced three elite NHL teams within four nights, with fatigue evident on the ice. Despite their effort, the Avalanche’s execution faltered at crucial moments. They fell behind late in the first period but responded with a spirited second period.
The Avalanche’s fourth line ignited a comeback with a goal at 3:22 of the second period. Zakhar Bardakov created the opportunity by collecting a rebound, and Parker Kelly capitalized, scoring his eighth goal of the season.
Meanwhile, Brock Nelson continued his scoring streak, netting a goal that marked his third in as many games since being named to the U.S. Olympic team. His shot from the left circle, which deflected off Erik Cernak, found the top corner, bringing his season total to 19 goals.
The Avalanche faced additional challenges as they played without captain Gabe Landeskog and defenseman Devon Toews, both sidelined with upper-body injuries. Their absence has been felt, and while Toews is expected to return sooner, Landeskog’s timeline remains uncertain.
As the Avalanche look to bounce back, their upcoming homestand will be crucial for recovery and reintegration of injured players. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team adjusts to this setback and whether they can regain their dominant form.
NEXT: The Avalanche will look to turn things around in their next match-up. Fans can expect updates on player injuries and performance as the team prepares for crucial home games ahead. Expect more from the Avalanche Insider for the latest analysis and news.
