The Oakland Athletics announced the demotion of right-hander Mitch Spence to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, following a disappointing performance in which he allowed five home runs during a 9-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves the previous day. In a corresponding move, the Athletics recalled fellow right-hander Osvaldo Bido from the same affiliate.

In the game against the Braves, Spence struggled significantly, surrendering eight runs and nine hits over six innings. This outing left him with a record of 2-5 and a 4.70 ERA across 29 appearances, including seven starts, for the Athletics this season. The team is looking for a change after this performance, hoping Bido can bring a fresh perspective to the pitching rotation.

In a separate but notable development, Jacob Wilson, the Athletics’ American League All-Star starting shortstop, did not feature in the starting lineup against Atlanta for the second consecutive night due to a left hand contusion. Wilson was hit by a pitch from rookie right-hander Didier Fuentes during the first inning of Tuesday’s game. Following that incident, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay revealed that Braves manager Brian Snitker reached out to express his apologies for the occurrence. The Braves subsequently optioned Fuentes, just 20 years old, to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Wilson, a rookie sensation, currently ranks second in the majors with an impressive batting average of .335. His absence is felt keenly as the team navigates a challenging season. Meanwhile, Bido, who has a record of 2-4 and a 6.14 ERA in 12 appearances this year, will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity to prove himself on the mound.

The Athletics continue to face challenges as they strive for improvement in the remainder of the season. With both Spence’s demotion and Wilson’s injury, the team is at a crucial juncture, needing to regroup and refocus as they move forward.
