Apple AirPods Pro 3 Introduces Accurate Heart Rate Tracking

The latest model of Apple’s wireless earbuds, the AirPods Pro 3, features an innovative heart rate tracking capability that leverages a new sensor technology. This development is particularly beneficial for fitness enthusiasts who often wear earbuds during workouts. In testing, the AirPods Pro 3 have demonstrated a level of accuracy not typically seen in similar devices.
How the Heart Rate Sensor Works
Located on the side of the AirPods Pro 3, the heart rate sensor utilizes infrared light, pulsing 256 times per second to measure blood flow in the wearer’s ears. For optimal performance, it is essential to keep this area clean and unobstructed. The data captured by the sensor is processed through algorithms designed to filter out external movements, such as footfalls, ensuring a more precise heart rate reading. This method contrasts with the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2, which relies on green LEDs and has been found less reliable in terms of accuracy.
To monitor heart rate, users must open the Fitness app on their iPhone and navigate to the Workout section. The app will indicate a connection to the AirPods in the top right corner. Once a workout begins, the heart rate will be displayed live within the app or on the lock screen. If paired with an Apple Watch, the system combines data from both devices, selecting the most accurate readings in real-time.
Tracking Capabilities Beyond Workouts
Beyond workout sessions, heart rate data can be accessed in the Health app under the Heart Rate section. The AirPods Pro 3 can also be integrated with Fitness+ workouts across various Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Future updates may allow for compatibility with third-party fitness applications, although this functionality has not yet been verified.
Initial tests comparing the AirPods Pro 3 to a chest strap heart monitor—known for its accuracy through electrical signals—revealed that the earbuds provided heart rate readings that closely matched the strap’s output. Remarkably, the AirPods Pro 3 even outperformed the Apple Watch Ultra 3 during these assessments.
For those who prefer not to utilize the heart rate tracking feature, it can be easily disabled through the settings on the iPhone. Users can navigate to the AirPods Pro 3 settings, scroll to the Privacy section, and toggle the heart rate feature on or off according to their preferences.
As the demand for advanced health monitoring continues to grow, the AirPods Pro 3 positions itself as a noteworthy contender in the wearable technology landscape, merging convenience with practical fitness applications.
