Albany’s Daysha Polite to Host Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner
UPDATE: Albany community is gearing up for a transformative Thanksgiving dinner hosted by 24-year-old Daysha Polite. On November 27, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m., residents are invited to gather at 2401 MLK Jr. Dr. for the Art.Sply Community Thanksgiving Dinner, a free event aimed at fostering unity and support amidst ongoing challenges in the city.
Polite, a dedicated Albany native, recognizes the pressing issues of food insecurity and community division. “We want to create a space where people can feel relaxed while eating,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of togetherness this holiday season. This year, the event will feature live music and care packages, enhancing the communal atmosphere.
This initiative follows Polite’s previous efforts, which have included food and clothing drives and distributing more than 150 Thanksgiving dinners in prior years. She is determined to shift this year’s format to a sit-down meal to strengthen community bonds.
“With federal cuts affecting benefits like those in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and rising crime rates, it’s crucial to offer a supportive environment,” Polite explained. Her observations link the local crime rate to the lack of financial stability and access to healthy food, leading to distress within Albany’s neighborhoods.
Polite’s commitment extends beyond just Thanksgiving. She plans to officially register her nonprofit, CLOUD 9 Inc., in 2026. The name reflects her vision—CLOUD stands for community, love, opportunity, unity, and drive, while the 9 pays homage to Albany’s area code, 2-2-9. The organization will focus on providing resources for youths and families, addressing the underlying issues contributing to behavioral challenges in schools.
“Low access to healthy food options directly impacts performance and behavior,” Polite noted, highlighting her efforts to implement programs aimed at job access and nutritional education.

“Expect a lot of love and empathy,” Polite urges. “I want attendees to feel they are not alone. Spreading love and community support is essential in overcoming challenges like crime and health disparities.”
