BREAKING: Albany State University’s Golden Rams are making headlines after a commanding 51-7 victory over Shaw University, propelling them to No. 3 in the latest HBCU Division II Coaches Poll. The team’s impressive performance has set the stage for a high-stakes matchup against Kentucky State this Saturday, September 2, 2025, at 1 p.m. CT in Frankfort, Kentucky.

The Golden Rams, now 1-0 for the season, showcased their dominance with standout performances. Veteran quarterback Isaiah Knowles racked up 205 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns, while running back Tiant Wyche added 137 yards and two scores, earning SIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Additionally, Cam Watts electrified the crowd with a dazzling 90-yard punt return touchdown, securing SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week recognition for his efforts.

The Golden Rams’ defense, known as the “Dirty Blue Defense,” was equally impressive, limiting Shaw University to just 189 total yards and forcing multiple turnovers. This stellar performance caught the attention of pollsters, leading to Albany State receiving two first-place votes in the HBCU D2 Coaches Poll powered by BOXTOROW.

“Our team is focused and ready for the challenge ahead,” said Albany State head coach.

In the latest rankings, defending national champion Virginia Union remains in the top spot, followed closely by Johnson C. Smith. The complete top five is as follows:

  • Virginia Union: 1-0, 175 points
  • Johnson C. Smith: 1-0, 153 points
  • Albany State: 1-0, 146 points

  • Tuskegee: 1-0, 99 points

On the other side, Kentucky State enters the game with momentum after a 34-24 victory over Central State in the Detroit Football Classic. Quarterbacks Torrence Bardell and Denim Johnson combined for over 300 passing yards and three touchdowns, showcasing their offensive prowess. The Thorobreds’ defense is equally formidable, with Lawrence McConnell recording nine tackles and Elijah Henderson intercepting a pass to seal the win.

Historically, Albany State has dominated this rivalry, winning 11 straight matchups against Kentucky State, including a decisive 49-21 victory last September. The Thorobreds last defeated the Golden Rams in back-to-back seasons in 2002 and 2003. However, this year’s Kentucky State team appears to be more competitive, setting the stage for a physical and high-energy battle.

As the Golden Rams look to extend their winning streak and solidify their standing in the SIAC, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this matchup unfolds. Will Albany State continue their dominance, or will Kentucky State rise to the occasion? Stay tuned for this thrilling showdown!
