Electric scooters are officially prohibited on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). While these scooters offer a convenient mode of transportation for short distances in urban areas, UWM has established strict regulations regarding their use on its grounds.

Electric scooters must be parked only in designated areas outside the campus. Riders can locate several parking spots on streets adjacent to UWM. The university’s policy stipulates that both self-service scooters and personal electric scooters cannot be parked or stored in buildings, on sidewalks, driveways, or within motor vehicle parking spaces.

Operational Restrictions on Campus

To enforce this ban, self-service scooters are programmed to shut down if they are ridden on campus. They are also disabled on UWM sidewalks, effectively restricting their operation to city streets. According to university guidelines, riders are required to adhere to these regulations by operating the scooters only on designated city roads and parking them in approved locations.

The university’s policy is outlined under UWS 18.10(5), which states, “no person shall operate an unauthorized motor vehicle or motorized device, including motorcycles, mopeds, motor scooters, and self-balancing transportation devices, off designated roadways, paved or unpaved, or on service roads or pedestrian paths, regardless of the surface, on university lands.” This policy does make exceptions for motorized wheelchairs and other mobility devices designed to assist individuals with disabilities.

Guidelines for Riders

For those wishing to utilize electric scooters in Milwaukee, adherence to local regulations is essential. Riders are encouraged to consult the City of Milwaukee’s dockless scooter program webpage for comprehensive information on riding and parking rules.

UWM’s initiative aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and maintain an orderly environment on campus. The university’s commitment to these regulations reflects a broader trend among educational institutions to balance innovative transportation options with the need for safety and accessibility.
