A Ukrainian drone attack ignited a significant fire at an oil depot in the Russian city of Sochi, according to regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev. The incident occurred early on Sunday morning, leading to a rapid response from emergency services, with over 120 firefighters deployed to extinguish the flames at the fuel storage facility.

The fire involved a fuel tank with a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters (approximately 70,000 cubic feet). The Krasnodar region, where Sochi is located along the Black Sea, has seen increased tensions as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to evolve. The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported the incident, citing emergency officials who confirmed the ongoing firefighting efforts.

In its daily morning report, the Russian defense ministry stated that its air defense units had destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one in the Krasnodar region. The ministry does not disclose how many drones Ukraine launched. As a precautionary measure, Rosaviatsia, Russia’s civil aviation authority, temporarily halted flights at Sochi’s airport. Flights resumed at 02:00 GMT on Sunday, after the airspace was deemed safe.

While there was no immediate response from Ukrainian officials regarding this attack, it marks a continuation of Ukraine’s strategy to target infrastructure within Russia that is perceived as critical to the ongoing war effort. In a previous incident in the Adler district of Sochi, a woman lost her life due to a Ukrainian drone strike late last month. Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, has not been a frequent target in the conflict since it erupted in February 2022.

The Krasnodar region also houses the Ilsky refinery, one of the largest in southern Russia, which has been a recurrent target of Ukrainian drone attacks. The significance of these strikes underlines the ongoing conflict’s impact on both military and civilian infrastructure.

In a related incident on the same day, the governor of the Voronezh region reported that four individuals were injured due to another Ukrainian drone strike that caused multiple fires. Concurrently, Russian forces launched a missile attack on Kyiv, as confirmed by the military administration of Ukraine’s capital. The Russian defense ministry reported the destruction of 18 Ukrainian drones over the Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine.

As hostilities continue to escalate, the situation remains tense, with both sides reporting casualties and infrastructure damage. The ongoing nature of these attacks illustrates the conflict’s far-reaching consequences, affecting not only military objectives but also civilian safety and regional stability.
