OpenAI Partners with Foxconn for AI Hardware Launch by 2026
OpenAI is transitioning its first AI hardware project to Foxconn Technology Group, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd, as it accelerates plans for a consumer device designed by renowned industrial designer Jony Ive. This shift marks a significant move away from previous manufacturing arrangements in mainland China, emphasizing OpenAI’s intention to establish a more diversified supply chain.
According to a report from Taiwan-based outlet UDN, OpenAI has decided to move production from Luxshare to Foxconn due to ongoing concerns regarding manufacturing in China. The new assembly locations are expected to be in either Vietnam or the United States, aligning with the company’s strategy for a non-China supply chain. The project, referred to internally as “Gumdrop,” is still in its design phase, with a commercial launch anticipated in 2026 or 2027.
Foxconn’s Expanding Role in AI Hardware Development
This partnership positions Foxconn as a vital player in OpenAI’s hardware initiatives, which range from AI servers in the cloud to consumer-oriented devices. Foxconn is already well-established in the tech manufacturing space, assembling products for major companies including Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc. The addition of OpenAI’s hardware orders could significantly boost Foxconn’s long-term growth trajectory.
While OpenAI has not yet issued an official comment regarding the partnership, the implications of this move are substantial. The new device could potentially take the form of a smart pen or a compact audio device, comparable to the size of an iPod Shuffle. Sources indicate that it may incorporate a microphone and camera, enabling it to interact with its environment and perform tasks such as handwritten note transcription directly into ChatGPT.

Earlier this year, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared his vision for the AI companion device during a podcast conversation.
