As the holiday shopping season intensifies with events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, a surge in online shopping scams has prompted warnings from experts. Scammers are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to create convincing fraudulent websites that lure in unsuspecting shoppers. According to data from NordVPN, there has been an alarming 250% increase in the establishment of fake shopping sites, making it imperative for consumers to remain vigilant.
Many of these scams present themselves through seemingly legitimate emails advertising steep discounts of 80% to 90%. These communications may appear to come from reputable retailers but can direct users to deceptive websites designed to capture personal information. To mitigate the risk, cybersecurity experts recommend that shoppers always verify the website’s URL, ensuring it begins with “https” and displays a padlock symbol.
Recognizing the “Brushing Scam”
In addition to misleading emails, another tactic used by criminals is the “brushing scam.” This involves unsolicited packages being delivered directly to recipients’ mailboxes, often containing small items such as imitation jewelry. According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, these packages typically include a letter inviting recipients to register the gift via a QR code.
Marjan Barrigan-Husted, a U.S. Postal Inspector, warns consumers against scanning these codes or providing any personal information. He emphasizes that such information can be exploited to access bank accounts and other sensitive data. If an unsolicited item arrives, he advises that recipients can keep the gift, but they should remain cautious about any requests for personal details.
