Testing the Video Capabilities

To assess the video quality, I recorded clips using the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and OnePlus 15, comparing them against the iPhone 17 Pro. The Pixel 10 Pro XL’s 8K capability is accessible only via its Video Boost mode, a feature that enhances video quality through cloud processing. This adds complexity to the process, as the recording must be uploaded, improved, and then returned to the device.

Performance of Each Device

Starting with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, its 8K recordings stand out primarily due to improved dynamic range. Cropping into specific details, such as a billboard sign, reveals slightly more definition in the 8K footage, particularly noticeable in smaller text.

The OnePlus 15 presents a contrasting approach, exhibiting greater contrast in its 8K captures. The shadows appear darker compared to its 4K footage. While the 8K video does offer improved detail, the difference is marginal. The edges of text on signs are sharper, yet the enhancement may not be significant enough to warrant a switch for every user.

The Pixel 10 Pro XL, known for its AI-assisted photo editing, complicates 8K recording due to its reliance on Video Boost. While the resulting videos showcase improved detail, the lengthy processing time—over an hour for a mere 15 seconds of footage—may deter users. The enhanced details are evident, but they may go unnoticed during casual viewing.

In comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro maintains a strong performance with its 4K recording. Despite lacking 8K capability, it delivers vibrant colors and an excellent dynamic range. Cropping into the footage highlights a slight loss in detail compared to its 8K counterparts, particularly in text definition.

Conclusion: Is 8K Worth It?

As the demand for higher resolution video recording grows, the benefits of 8K become more apparent. The ability to capture additional detail offers editors more flexibility in post-production, allowing for cropping without noticeable quality loss. Yet, for many users, especially those viewing content on smaller screens, the incentive to record in 8K may be limited.

The iPhone 17 Pro, while lacking in 8K recording, does not fall short in delivering quality video. For typical users, the absence of this feature is not detrimental, especially when considering the large file sizes associated with 8K footage. As technology continues to advance, future iterations of smartphones may see improvements in video capabilities, but for now, the current offerings from Samsung, Google, and OnePlus provide valuable options for those seeking high-resolution content.
