In Fresno, California, a new support group is providing a lifeline for caregivers of individuals with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), a debilitating brain disease that affects both cognitive and motor functions. Starting February 27, 2020, the group will meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at 5363 N. Fresno Street, offering a space for shared experiences and understanding.

Lewy Body Dementia is characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, sleep disturbances, stiffness, and fluctuating levels of awareness. These symptoms can be overwhelming not only for those diagnosed but also for their caregivers, who often face emotional and physical challenges. The support group aims to alleviate feelings of isolation and frustration by fostering a community of empathy and support.

Understanding Lewy Body Dementia

Lewy Body Dementia is the second most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. It is caused by the abnormal buildup of proteins known as Lewy bodies in the brain, which affects chemicals in the brain and leads to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood.

According to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, approximately 1.4 million people in the United States are affected by this condition. Despite its prevalence, LBD is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed, leading to challenges in managing the disease effectively.

“LBD is a complex and challenging disease, both for those who have it and for their caregivers. Support groups can be a critical resource for sharing strategies and finding solace in shared experiences,” said Yee Vue, MSW, the coordinator of the Fresno support group.

The Role of Support Groups

Support groups play a crucial role in providing caregivers with the emotional and practical support they need. They offer a safe space for individuals to express their feelings, share coping strategies, and learn more about the disease. For many caregivers, these groups are a source of hope and resilience.

Research has shown that caregivers who participate in support groups often experience reduced stress and improved mental health. The opportunity to connect with others who understand their challenges can help caregivers feel less alone and more empowered to handle their caregiving responsibilities.

“Caregiving can be an isolating experience, but knowing that there are others who understand what you’re going through can make a significant difference,” added Vue.

Looking Ahead

The establishment of this support group in Fresno is a positive step towards building a stronger network of resources for those affected by Lewy Body Dementia. As awareness of the disease grows, so too does the potential for improved diagnosis, treatment, and support for both patients and caregivers.

For those interested in joining the support group or seeking more information, Yee Vue, MSW, is available at (559) 224-9154. The group meets monthly from 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M., providing a consistent opportunity for caregivers to connect and find guidance.

As the community of caregivers comes together, the hope is that no one will have to face the challenges of Lewy Body Dementia alone. The support group represents a beacon of hope and understanding in the journey of caregiving.
