Alexander Zverev has raised concerns regarding recent changes in tennis court conditions, suggesting they are being modified to benefit players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Zverev, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, expressed his views after securing a victory over Valentin Royer with a score of 6-4, 6-4 at the Shanghai Masters on Saturday.

In a candid on-court interview, Zverev stated, “I hate when it’s the same, to be honest. I think the tournament directors are going towards that direction because, obviously, they want Jannik and Carlos to do well every tournament, and that’s what they prefer.” He articulated his belief that the variety in playing conditions is diminishing, indicating a standardization that he finds troubling.

Zverev’s comments come at a time when Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated the men’s tennis scene, being the only players to hold the No. 1 ranking since June 2024. The two have split the titles at this year’s four Grand Slam tournaments and have each recently celebrated victories, with Sinner winning the China Open and Alcaraz claiming the Japan Open. Notably, Alcaraz is currently sidelined from the Shanghai Masters due to a left ankle injury.

During the match against Royer, Zverev experienced a toe injury that required on-court treatment while serving for the match at 5-4. Despite the setback, he managed to complete the match. “I landed funny on my toe, and after that I could barely do a step, so we’ll see what it is,” he explained. “We will see if I will ever be healthy this year again, because it’s been a struggle, but I’m happy to be through.”

Zverev’s remarks highlight a growing concern among players about the direction of the sport and the implications of uniform playing conditions. He emphasized the need for diversity in game styles, stating, “Tennis needs different game styles, tennis needs a little bit of variety, and I think we’re lacking that right now.”

As the tennis world continues to evolve, Zverev’s perspective may resonate with fans and players alike who value the rich tapestry of playing styles that have historically defined the sport. His performance at the Shanghai Masters, despite physical challenges, showcases his resilience and determination to compete at the highest level.
