In a remarkable debut, 12-year-old Yu Zidi from China made her presence felt at the swimming world championships held in Singapore on August 13, 2023. Competing against some of the world’s top swimmers, Yu clocked a time of 2 minutes, 11.90 seconds in the 200-meter individual medley, securing her place in the semifinals. This impressive performance marked a significant milestone for the young athlete, who has garnered attention for her outstanding swimming times back home.

Yu’s time, while slightly below her season-best of 2 minutes, 10.63 seconds, was still strong enough to earn her the 15th fastest qualifying spot among the 16 semifinalists. As she continues to compete in an eight-day schedule, Yu will also participate in the 400-meter individual medley and the 200-meter butterfly. These two events showcase her strengths, with recent performances at the Chinese championships ranking among the best globally this season.

Impressive Potential and Future Competitions

Although the 200-meter individual medley is considered her least competitive event, Yu’s times in both the butterfly and the individual medley indicate her potential to excel on the world stage. Notably, her best times in these events would have placed her in fourth position at the 2022 Paris Olympics, highlighting her rapid development as a swimmer.

The governing body of swimming, World Aquatics, allows younger swimmers to compete if they meet qualifying standards, even with an age limit set at 14. This regulation has enabled Yu to showcase her talent at such a prestigious event, reflecting her hard work and commitment to the sport.

As the championships progress, all eyes will be on Yu Zidi, who is not just representing her country but also embodying the future of competitive swimming. With the world watching, her journey in Singapore could be just the beginning of an exciting career in athletics.
