The Wisconsin Badgers are shifting their reputation from producing top-tier offensive linemen and linebackers to cultivating standout safeties. This evolution became evident when Hunter Wohler was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Wohler marked a significant milestone as the first Badgers safety drafted since 2018 and only the third since 2001. Now, another player, Austin Brown, is aiming to follow in Wohler’s footsteps, capturing the attention of NFL scouts.

Head coach Luke Fickell expressed confidence in Brown’s potential, stating, “Your ability is everything they’re looking for at the next level. Your ability to show that is what’s going to be the biggest difference.” Brown’s athleticism has earned him a spot on Bruce Feldman‘s annual Freaks list, which highlights elite players in college football. Securing the 64th position on this list, Brown impressed with a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, a 41-inch vertical leap, and an impressive 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. These figures would have placed him among the top competitors at the 2025 NFL Combine.

Despite his remarkable physical prowess, Brown’s journey has not been without challenges. Over his first three seasons in Madison, he transitioned between nickelback and safety. This year, he has finally settled into the strong safety position, yielding productive results. In a recent game against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Brown recorded a career-high 11 tackles, eight of which were solo. His adaptability and experience across multiple positions have enhanced his value on the field.

Through the first three games of the season, Brown has solidified his status as a key player for the Badgers. He ranks third on the team in tackles and is tied for third in tackles for loss, along with contributing a pass break-up. Notably, according to Pro Football Focus, Brown has yet to miss a tackle this season, underscoring his reliability and skill.

Fickell acknowledged Brown’s talent, emphasizing his speed, size, and tackling ability. “He’s one of the more talented guys I think we have on the entire team,” he stated. Brown’s performance has been consistent, underscoring the idea that it was only a matter of time before his abilities shone through.

As the Badgers navigate their season, the spotlight will continue to be on Austin Brown, not only as a critical player for the team but also as a promising candidate for the NFL. His journey reflects the evolving landscape of Wisconsin football, where safeties are now becoming significant contributors to the program’s legacy.
