Warrior Boys End Lyman’s Streak with Strong Second Half

WINNER, S.D. — The Winner High School boys’ basketball team ended Lyman’s five-game win streak with a decisive 67-55 victory on January 20, 2023. Despite trailing 27-22 at halftime, the Warriors surged in the second half, outscoring Lyman 43-28. This performance is a significant boost for Winner, which now stands at 5-4 for the season.

The turning point came in the third quarter, where Winner’s offense exploded, allowing them to take a commanding 44-36 lead into the final frame. Carter Craven led the scoring for the Warriors with 19 points, complemented by three steals and two blocks. His brother, Cooper Craven, contributed 15 points along with four rebounds and three steals. Jalen Tideman also played a crucial role, adding 14 points and seven rebounds.

On the opposing side, MJ Diehm was a standout for the Raiders, scoring a game-high 21 points. He also recorded six rebounds and three steals. Dawsen Volmer and Josiah Vaad chipped in with 14 and 10 points, respectively, but their efforts fell short against Winner’s momentum.

As the season progresses, Winner will look to build on this victory when they face Bennett County on January 27, while Lyman, now with a record of 7-3, will host Burke on January 25.

In other boys’ basketball action, McCook Central/Montrose defeated Colman-Egan 60-47. Ben Wiebersick was instrumental in this win, scoring 16 points and gathering four rebounds. His teammates Dawson Dorr and Zane McCormick contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. For Colman-Egan, Caden Zwart stood out with a game-high 23 points.

In a closely contested matchup, Wagner edged out Miller with a score of 68-60. Jesse Zephier led Wagner with 26 points, while Isaak Hunter was the top scorer for Miller with 28 points.

The night also saw Tripp-Delmont/Armour secure a 48-39 victory over Bon Homme. Daylin Kok shone for the Nighthawks with 18 points, while Ashton Koster recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

In another notable game, Freeman overwhelmed Centerville 77-42, dominating the first half 43-23. Luke Peters led the Flyers with 16 points, while Tayden Kerrigan added an impressive 15 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

A strong second-half performance also propelled Corsica-Stickney to a 70-56 victory over Andes Central/Dakota Christian. The Jaguars were led by Peyton Denning, who scored 12 points, while Samuel Rouse of Andrade Central recorded a game-high 21 points.

In girls’ basketball, the top-ranked team, Lyman, continued its impressive form with a 58-27 win over White River. Jordyn Scott spearheaded the victory with 19 points, seven rebounds, and four steals.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour also triumphed, defeating Bon Homme 46-29, with Kinley Spaans achieving a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds.
