The Toronto Raptors have signed former first-round pick David Roddy to an Exhibit 10 contract, allowing him the opportunity to join the team or their G League affiliate. Roddy was part of the extensive seven-team trade that involved star player Kevin Durant, which saw him move from the Houston Rockets to Atlanta. The 24-year-old basketball player was originally selected as the 23rd overall pick by the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2022 NBA Draft. Over the course of his season and a half with Memphis, he averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in approximately 20 minutes per game.
Despite his potential, Roddy had difficulty finding consistent playing time after his trade to the Phoenix Suns, where he was unable to secure a spot in the rotation. His NBA experience has spanned multiple teams, including brief appearances with the Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers.
A Unique Player Profile and Challenges
Roddy stands out in the league due to his unusual physical attributes, measuring 6-foot-4 and weighing 255 pounds. While he was a dominant player at Colorado State, translating that success to the professional level has proven challenging. His three-point shooting percentage of 30.2% has not been sufficient to fully leverage his skill set in the NBA.
The Raptors currently have a crowded offseason roster, but they are keen to evaluate Roddy’s capabilities. This signing presents a low-risk opportunity for the organization to assess whether his unique playing style can be developed within their system.
