Scheffler Revamps Ryder Cup Strategy After 2023 Setback

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is changing his preparation strategy for the upcoming Ryder Cup, following a disappointing performance in 2023. The United States team suffered a defeat against Europe, and Scheffler reflected on his experience, stating that his preparation “was not as good as it should have been.”
In a candid assessment of his performance, Scheffler noted, “When I look back at the ’23 Cup, I think I halved two matches and lost two. I left there without winning a single match, and that hurt.” He described the experience as a valuable learning opportunity, emphasizing the need for sharper preparation.
Adjusting to Build Success
Team dynamics and morale are crucial in tournaments like the Ryder Cup. Collin Morikawa, a teammate, expressed the lingering feeling of disappointment from the loss in Rome, stating, “It sucked. It sits with you for a little bit.” Recognizing the importance of competitive play, Scheffler has incorporated the Procore Championship into his training regimen. He will compete alongside Morikawa and eight other members of the U.S. team in preparation for the tournament scheduled from September 26-28, 2023.
Reflecting on his previous experiences, Scheffler remarked, “It would be unusual for me to have four or five weeks off before the Masters or the U.S. Open.” He firmly believes that maintaining a competitive edge is essential leading up to the Ryder Cup. While some team members visited Rome to scout the venue, Scheffler insists that playing competitive golf remains irreplaceable.
Team Spirit and Leadership
Since the conclusion of the Open Championship in July, Scheffler has been focused on preparing for the matches at Bethpage Black. He praised the efforts of team captain Keegan Bradley, highlighting the importance of organization and team energy. “You can practice and do all you can at home, but there’s something different about playing competition, getting ready for a tournament,” Scheffler said. “Everybody’s excited to be here.”
Despite being the top player in the world, Scheffler maintains a humble perspective on his role within the team. He stated that he does not view his position as anything more than an opportunity to contribute points. Bradley commended Scheffler’s selfless attitude, noting his ability to thrive in high-pressure situations. “I think he would hope that it comes down to him in singles,” Bradley remarked. “That kind of separates Scottie from the rest of the guys.”
As the Ryder Cup approaches, Scheffler is determined to be as prepared as possible, eager to turn lessons learned into success on the course. The upcoming matches will serve as a pivotal moment in his career, as well as an opportunity for the U.S. team to reclaim victory.
