Royals Trade for Veteran Pitcher Matt Strahm from Phillies
The Kansas City Royals have acquired veteran pitcher Matt Strahm from the Philadelphia Phillies, marking a significant trade on November 3, 2023. In exchange, the Royals sent right-hander Jonathan Bowlan to Philadelphia. This move reunites Strahm with the team that drafted him in the 21st round of the 2012 first-year player draft.
Strahm, a left-handed pitcher now 34 years old, has a decade-long career in Major League Baseball, having played for the Royals, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, and most recently the Phillies. He enjoyed a standout season in 2024, earning an All-Star selection after posting a remarkable 1.87 ERA over 66 appearances. In 2025, he maintained strong performance with a 2.74 ERA across the same number of games.
This trade not only brings Strahm back to Kansas City but also adds depth to the Royals’ pitching staff. His career statistics demonstrate his reliability, with a cumulative 3.36 ERA in 395 appearances. Strahm’s contract includes a vested option for next season valued at $7.5 million, part of a larger deal worth $15 million for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. He is set to become a free agent after the 2026 World Series.
In contrast, Bowlan, 29, has been with the Royals for parts of the last three seasons. He made a career-high of 34 appearances in 2025, recording a record of 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA. This trade reflects a strategic shift for both teams as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Overall, the acquisition of Strahm is seen as a positive move for the Royals, who look to bolster their pitching lineup as they aim for a competitive edge in the league. The trade highlights Strahm’s valuable experience and successful track record, which will be crucial for Kansas City’s aspirations moving forward.
