Defending champion Aaron Rai faced an unexpected challenge as severe weather interrupted the second round of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina. Having started strong with a remarkable opening round of seven-under 63, Rai was just one stroke away from the lead when lightning halted play.

American Cameron Young was ahead at 14-under par when the inclement weather forced players off the course. With a solid performance that included five birdies on the front nine, Young showed determination as he aims for a place on the Ryder Cup team. “For me it’s not necessarily about this week. I’ve got a goal. In the middle of September I’d like to be in New York playing on that Ryder Cup team,” he stated. His focus is on the bigger picture, hoping that success in the coming weeks will build his confidence.

Rai’s round was impressive up until the weather delay, featuring three birdies in his first five holes and two more after the turn before play was suspended on the 14th hole. He won this tournament last year, marking his first PGA Tour title, and is keen to replicate that success.

Also in contention are fellow Americans Mac Meissner and Joel Dahmen, who both recorded strong scores to keep the competition fierce. Meissner ended the day with a seven-under 63, while South Korea’s Sungjae Im shot six-under 64, leading in the clubhouse at 12-under par.

As play resumes on Saturday morning, Young will continue from the edge of the 16th green, where he hopes to secure another birdie to extend his lead. Dahmen, who is focused on securing a spot in the top 70 of the FedEx Cup rankings ahead of the playoffs, remains competitive at nine-under, having mixed two birdies with two bogeys.

Among those looking to improve their standings is Gary Woodland, who registered an albatross on the par-five fifth hole. He posted a score of 64, positioning himself alongside Dahmen in a bid to clinch a playoff spot.

Fans can catch live coverage of the second round starting at 19:00 local time on Sky Sports Golf. The competition continues to intensify, with players focused not only on this tournament but also on their aspirations for future events, including the prestigious Ryder Cup.
