Quinton de Kock Returns to One-Day Internationals for Pakistan Tour

Quinton de Kock has made a significant return to South Africa’s national cricket team, reversing his retirement from one-day internationals (ODIs). The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been selected for both white-ball squads for the upcoming tour of Pakistan, which runs from October 12 to November 8, 2023.
De Kock initially stepped away from the ODI format following the 2023 World Cup, where he amassed a remarkable total of 6,770 runs in 155 matches, including 21 centuries. Although he did not retire from T20 internationals, his last appearance in that format was during the 2024 T20 World Cup final, where South Africa faced a disappointing defeat against India. During that tournament, he was the leading run-scorer for the Proteas.
South Africa’s head coach, Shukri Conrad, expressed enthusiasm about de Kock’s return, stating, “Quinton’s return to the white-ball space is a major boost for us. When we spoke last month about his future, it was clear that he still has a strong ambition to represent his country. Everyone knows the quality he brings to the side and having him back can only benefit the team.”
In recent months, de Kock has been active in various franchise T20 leagues, including the Indian Premier League and the Caribbean Premier League. His involvement in these high-profile leagues has kept him in competitive form, potentially enhancing his contribution to the national team.
Reflecting on his previous retirement from ODIs, de Kock had indicated that he might consider returning for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. At that time, he remarked, “At this point, I don’t foresee it happening. But you never know. Strange things happen in life. It could be a possibility but I don’t think so.” His recent selection suggests that he is ready to embrace the challenge of international cricket once again.
The upcoming series against Pakistan includes two Test matches, three T20 matches, and three ODIs, offering de Kock an opportunity to showcase his skills on an international stage once more. The cricketing world will be watching closely as he aims to leave a lasting impact in the series.
