Penn State Aims for First Big Ten Title Since 2016 with Strong Roster

The Penn State Nittany Lions are gearing up for a significant challenge this season as they pursue their first Big Ten title since 2016. Ranked second in the nation, the team is optimistic about its prospects, bolstered by a seasoned roster and experienced coaching staff. They will look to capitalize on their strengths while navigating a competitive conference landscape.
Strong Leadership and Experienced Players
Unlike their rivals, such as defending national champion Ohio State and last year’s Big Ten champion Oregon, who are integrating new quarterbacks, Penn State enters the season with Drew Allar, a three-year starter. Allar is supported by two running backs who each surpassed 1,000 rushing yards last season, alongside a top-10 defense coordinated by Jim Knowles, who is in his first year with the team.
James Franklin, head coach of the Nittany Lions, expressed confidence in his team’s capabilities, stating, “When you look at all of our personnel, not just the players, but the staff and players, it’s the best combination that we’ve had in my 12 years here. The depth, the experience, the talent is impressive.”
Penn State has achieved at least 10 victories in the past three seasons. Last year marked a milestone as they reached the College Football Playoff for the first time, winning against SMU and Boise State before falling to Notre Dame in a tightly contested semifinal, 27-24. Despite the success, critics point out that the team struggles in high-pressure situations, a sentiment echoed by Franklin.
“We were a drive away from playing for the national championship last year, and 99% of the programs in the country would be jacked about that season and how it went, and I don’t know if that was necessarily the case here,” Franklin remarked.
Challengers in the Big Ten
Looking at the competition, Ohio State and Oregon are also considered strong contenders for the playoff. Ohio State’s new quarterback, Julian Sayin, has been named to lead the team, as they aim for their first Big Ten title since 2020 while seeking to defend their national championship.
Oregon, coming off a perfect 13-0 season and a victory over Penn State in the conference championship, welcomes Dante Moore, a former five-star recruit from UCLA, to replace Dillon Gabriel. Expectations are high, particularly with Dakorien Moore, the top-rated receiver from the 2025 recruiting class, joining the roster.
Meanwhile, Michigan, ranked 14th, has secured the nation’s number one recruit, quarterback Bryce Underwood. The Wolverines hope that Underwood and a revamped receiving corps will enhance their offensive performance, which was the least effective in the Big Ten last season.
Among the rising teams, the Illinois Fighting Illini stand out. After a successful 10-win season, they return quarterback Luke Altmyer and 15 other starters. Their recent ability to defeat four Top 25 opponents in a single season has led to discussions about their potential as a College Football Playoff contender.
With the Big Ten landscape evolving, it will be essential for teams to maintain momentum. The upcoming schedule features significant matchups, including a key game for Penn State against No. 7 Oregon on September 27 and a critical clash against No. 3 Ohio State on November 1.
As the season unfolds, the Nittany Lions are poised to make a strong case for their first conference championship in seven years. With their depth and experience, they remain a formidable force capable of challenging their rivals for supremacy in the Big Ten.
