North Carolina Football Team Seeks New Offensive Coordinator
The North Carolina Tar Heels football program is undergoing significant changes this offseason, marked by the departure of offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens. His dismissal, announced by head coach Bill Belichick during a press conference last week, follows a disappointing performance from the Tar Heels’ offense, which averaged just 19.3 points per game, ranking 119th in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Additionally, the team recorded an average of 288.8 yards per game, placing them at the bottom of the FBS rankings at 129th.
With Kitchens now out, North Carolina is actively searching for a replacement. Reports indicate that the focus has narrowed to two potential candidates: Chip Kelly and Bobby Petrino. Kelly, who was recently let go by the Las Vegas Raiders after a brief and unremarkable stint, oversaw one of the NFL’s worst offenses this past season. In contrast, Petrino served as the interim head coach at Arkansas after having been the offensive coordinator since 2024.
The prospect of either Kelly or Petrino taking the helm as offensive coordinator presents a mixed outlook for the Tar Heels heading into the 2026 season. While both candidates have experience, their recent records raise concerns about their ability to revitalize North Carolina’s struggling offense. The program is in need of a fresh, innovative play-caller with a proven track record of success, ideally at the NFL level.
Belichick’s decision-making is under scrutiny, as the Tar Heels cannot afford another lackluster season. The head coach, aged 73, faces pressure to deliver results, especially considering he has a $1 million buyout option that could facilitate an exit before the 2026 season. Nevertheless, Belichick appears committed to the program and is expected to conduct thorough due diligence in selecting the next offensive coordinator.
As North Carolina’s search continues, fans and stakeholders are eager for a swift resolution. The upcoming hire is crucial; the Tar Heels need to avoid another season without a bowl appearance, a scenario that could have lasting implications for the program’s future. The next few weeks will be pivotal as North Carolina seeks to solidify its coaching staff and bolster its offensive performance ahead of the new season.
