The Morton-White Pass (MWP) girls basketball team secured a convincing victory against Ocosta, winning 55-31 on January 20, 2024. This match marked MWP’s fourth consecutive win, keeping their unbeaten record intact. Despite facing challenges from flooding that disrupted practice for four days, the Timberwolves demonstrated resilience and skill on the court.

The game took place in Morton, Washington, where the Timberwolves jumped to an early lead. MWP outscored Ocosta in the first quarter, taking a 15-5 advantage. By halftime, the lead had increased to 18 points, as the Timberwolves continued to assert their dominance. A standout third quarter saw MWP outscore the Wildcats 21-6, extending their lead to 33 points and setting the stage for a strong finish.

Tim McCoy, the head coach of MWP, praised his team’s performance. “We just shot really well today,” he stated. He also highlighted the effectiveness of the team’s defensive strategy, which included successful execution of man-to-man defense, a tactic they had not relied on heavily prior to this game. “They’re learning how to switch in the screen and roll, and they did pretty well,” McCoy added.

The offensive prowess of MWP was led by Maila Armstrong, who scored 17 points. Ryelin Wiedenmann contributed 15 points, while Layna Sams added nine points and Chevy Fuller chipped in with six. The team’s balanced scoring was a key factor in their commanding victory.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves face a demanding schedule with four games planned in the upcoming week. Their next challenge is a home matchup against Tenino on January 23, 2024. Coach McCoy expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming games, saying, “We’re looking forward to getting at it.”

With this victory, Morton-White Pass continues to build momentum as they navigate their season, showcasing both their skill and adaptability in the face of challenges.
