Logan Wilson Seeks Trade to Dallas as NFL Deadline Approaches
CINCINNATI — Linebacker Logan Wilson has officially requested a trade from the Cincinnati Bengals as the NFL’s trade deadline approaches on October 31, 2023. His potential move to the Dallas Cowboys is gaining traction, particularly as the Cowboys struggle with defensive efficiency this season.
Wilson, currently sidelined due to injury, has expressed a desire for a fresh start. His performance under new defensive coordinator Al Golden has not met expectations, reflected in a disappointing 54.8 Pro Football Focus grade and a 125.8 passer rating allowed on 25 targets. The Cowboys, ranked 31st in both pass and rush defense efficiency, could benefit from Wilson’s skillset, especially as they attempt to address significant gaps in their defensive lineup.
The Cowboys have allowed the second-most points this season, averaging 31.3 points per game, and have struggled to contain opposing offenses, giving up an average of 404.6 yards per game. Their defensive struggles are compounded by a low turnover rate, ranking 27th in takeaways per game at 0.88 and having missed 75 tackles, which ties them for the sixth-most in the league.
In light of these challenges, the Cowboys’ General Manager and Owner Jerry Jones has indicated that they have the resources, or “ammo,” to make trades aimed at bolstering their defense. The absence of a consistent playmaker at linebacker has become a pressing concern, particularly in the wake of Micah Parsons‘ injury.
Wilson’s situation in Cincinnati has deteriorated since he was benched in favor of rookie Barrett Carter. After starting the first seven games of the season and being on the field for more than 70% of defensive snaps in those games, Wilson has seen a significant drop in playing time, participating in just 30.5% of snaps since Week 6. Despite this, Wilson has maintained a commendable tackle rate, registering 148 tackles on 162 attempts in 2024, which translates to a 91.4% tackle rate, ranking him ninth among linebackers. He has also allowed a 66.7% completion rate when targeted, outperforming any Cowboys linebacker with at least 100 snaps.
As the Bengals prepare for their upcoming game against the Chicago Bears, Wilson aims to return to practice soon, especially as the team faces several injuries. His leadership and experience could provide a considerable boost for any team looking to enhance their defensive capabilities.
In light of Wilson’s impressive track record from 2021 to 2023, where he recorded nine interceptions, four forced fumbles, and 17 passes defended alongside approximately 120 tackles per season, a change of scenery might indeed serve both Wilson and the Cowboys well. As the trade deadline looms, all eyes will be on whether this potential deal materializes, reshaping the dynamics of both franchises.
