Jose Butto Returns as Mets Bullpen Reinforcements Take Shape
The New York Mets welcomed back pitcher Jose Butto on Wednesday, a vital return as the team looks to solidify its bullpen ahead of the impending trade deadline. While Butto’s performance against the Los Angeles Angels was less than stellar—allowing two earned runs on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning—the overall development is seen as a positive step for the Mets.
The Mets secured a 6-3 victory at Citi Field, aided by the efforts of Brooks Raley, who stepped up to claim the final out in the seventh inning and two additional outs in the eighth. Manager Carlos Mendoza noted the encouraging velocity and command displayed by Butto, despite the difficult outing. “In general, I didn’t see big misses or the velo wasn’t there, it just didn’t go his way today,” Mendoza explained.
Butto had been sidelined with an illness since July 1, making his return crucial as the Mets seek to enhance their relief options. Mendoza emphasized Butto’s importance to the bullpen, stating, “This is a guy who helps you bridge the gap and get the ball to the back end of the bullpen.” With a 2.84 ERA over 32 appearances this season, Butto has proven to be a reliable asset.
Strategic Moves and Future Outlook
Raley, who recently completed his rehab from Tommy John surgery, is also positioning himself as a key high-leverage option for the Mets. Mendoza remarked on Raley’s significant role, particularly after retiring Mike Trout, who represented the potential tying run in the seventh inning. “We are asking a lot out of him right out of the gate. Ideally, I didn’t want to push him to 29 pitches, but that is where we were today,” Mendoza stated.
In preparation for Butto’s return, the Mets optioned Justin Garza to Triple-A Syracuse. In addition, president of baseball operations David Stearns identified the bullpen as a primary focus as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. Paul Blackburn, recovering from a shoulder impingement, is expected to make another minor league start before being considered for a return to the major league roster. Blackburn will serve as rotation insurance and may also provide long relief as needed.
Meanwhile, Jesse Winker is still in the recovery phase from a lower back strain and has not yet advanced to baseball activities. In a positive note for the team, outfielder Starling Marte made a strong return from the injured list, finishing the game with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double. Over his last 18 games, Marte has demonstrated impressive form with a batting average of .358 and an OPS of .875.
