In a significant development for both Joe Thornton and the San Jose Sharks, the team announced on March 5, 2024, that Thornton has officially joined the organization as a player development coach and hockey operations advisor. This move marks Thornton’s return to a franchise where he spent an illustrious 15 seasons and solidifies his ongoing involvement with the Sharks following his retirement from professional play.

Thornton, a revered figure in hockey, had his number 19 retired by the Sharks in 2023, a testament to his impact on the team. Thornton’s accomplishments speak volumes about his career. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in February 2024, following a remarkable 24-year stint in the NHL. Throughout his career, he accumulated 1,539 points comprising 430 goals and 1,109 assists over 1,714 games. His statistics place him 14th in points, seventh in assists, and sixth in games played among all players in NHL history. Notably, he is one of just 14 players to achieve over 1,000 assists and was the seventh player to mark the milestones of 1,500 games played, 1,000 assists, and 400 goals.

Thornton was originally acquired by the Sharks in a trade with the Boston Bruins in November 2005. He played a crucial role in transforming the franchise into a competitive force during his tenure, which lasted until the end of the pandemic-affected 2019-2020 season.
