Giants Explore New Roles for Rookie Abdul Carter Ahead of 49ers Matchup

The New York Giants are considering new strategies to help rookie linebacker Abdul Carter find his rhythm as the team prepares for their upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers on October 29, 2023. Despite being the third overall pick in the NFL Draft, Carter has struggled to make a significant impact, recording just half a sack so far this season. However, he stands out as one of two rookies, alongside Donovan Ezeiruaku of the Dallas Cowboys, to register at least ten pressures.

To enhance Carter’s development, the Giants initially placed him on the punt coverage unit. Yet, his participation in special teams has diminished recently, with no snaps in the last two games against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Denver Broncos. As the team gears up for their next challenge, Giants special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial indicated that there may still be opportunities for Carter to contribute in various roles.

Potential for Growth and Impact

Carter’s most notable moment in his early career came when he blocked a punt from Tress Way during the season opener against Washington. While this play showcased his potential, the Giants appear to have broader plans for him. In the recent game against Philadelphia, Carter played over 83 percent of defensive snaps, marking a new personal best, along with achieving five tackles, another career high.

Ghobrial has previously suggested that Carter might take on a more significant role in the punt return unit, albeit with a focus on blitzing. He emphasized Carter’s “explosiveness,” suggesting it could prove valuable in critical game situations, such as thwarting field goals. “Situations, time in game, score differential, all will factor into what we ask him to do,” Ghobrial stated in September. He added that Carter’s skills could elevate the team’s special teams performance, particularly in high-pressure moments.

Upcoming Game Dynamics

The Giants, currently with a record of 2-6, face the 49ers at 1 p.m. ET on CBS. This matchup not only holds significance for the Giants’ season but also marks a reunion for Ghobrial and 49ers special teams coach Brant Boyer. The two previously worked together for two seasons with the New York Jets.

As the Giants seek a turnaround in their season, the focus remains on maximizing Carter’s contributions. The upcoming game against the 49ers could provide a platform for the rookie to showcase his abilities and help the team secure a much-needed victory.
