Florida State Fined $50K for Storming Field After Upset Win

Florida State University (FSU) has become the first institution fined under the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) new event security policy, receiving a penalty of $50,000 after fans stormed the field following their 31-17 victory over Alabama on September 30, 2023. This incident marks a significant enforcement of the policy designed to enhance safety for players, coaches, officials, and fans during sporting events.
The ACC implemented the new security guidelines this season, with a particular focus on football and both men’s and women’s basketball games. As outlined by ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips during the policy’s announcement in July 2023, the aim is to prevent potentially hazardous situations that may arise when fans rush the field or court.
Following the victory, jubilant FSU supporters quickly flooded the field, celebrating what was considered an upset, given that the team had struggled in the previous season with a 2-10 record. The last time Florida State fans engaged in a similar display was in 2022 after a win against Florida.
In accordance with the new policy, the ACC stipulates that a second violation within the same season will incur a substantial increase in fines, amounting to $100,000. All fines collected through this enforcement will contribute to a postgraduate scholarship fund, aiding student-athletes pursuing graduate education.
The decision to impose the fine reflects the ACC’s commitment to prioritizing safety at athletic events. The league aims to ensure that the excitement of college sports does not compromise the well-being of participants and spectators alike. FSU’s recent fine may serve as a cautionary tale for other institutions in the conference as they navigate the balance between fan enthusiasm and event security measures.
