PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles’ notable success in ball security can be traced back to head coach Nick Sirianni’s influential experience with renowned coach Tom Rathman. As Sirianni prepared for the upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys, he reflected on the lessons learned during his tenure as offensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2020.

Initially, Sirianni believed he had a strong grasp on teaching ball security. That changed once he witnessed Rathman’s intense focus on the subject. “He was a maniac about it and just relentless about it,” Sirianni remarked, highlighting Rathman’s commitment to ensuring players understood the importance of protecting the football.

Rathman’s Impact on Coaching Techniques

Rathman, who played as a fullback for the San Francisco 49ers during the mid-1980s, brought a unique perspective to coaching. His tenure with the Colts coincided with Sirianni’s leadership, where he emphasized not only the physical aspects of ball security but also the mental strategies involved. This included meticulously analyzing film to illustrate both proper and improper techniques.

“The outcome of games is determined by turnovers,” Rathman stated during a recent phone interview. “I just teach it the way I believe it needs to be done.”

Rathman noted that the evolution of defensive tactics, particularly the “Peanut Punch” technique popularized by former Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman, necessitated a shift in coaching methods. “We call it the ‘Peanut Punch’… it created an extra layer of security,” Rathman explained. His approach involved using what he referred to as the “clasp hand” technique, where players hold the football tightly against their bodies to prevent fumbles.

During Rathman’s three seasons with the Colts, they achieved a plus-14 turnover differential, with turnovers decreasing each season. In 2020, the Colts recorded only 15 turnovers, the third fewest in the league, contributing to their playoff appearance following an 11-5 season.

Continuing a Winning Philosophy in Philadelphia

After Rathman’s retirement, his teachings continued to influence Sirianni’s coaching philosophy in Philadelphia. The Eagles recorded just 16 turnovers in 2021, ranking fifth in the league, although their turnover differential was zero due to a lack of defensive takeaways.

To reinforce the emphasis on ball security, Sirianni introduced a banner in the team meeting auditorium highlighting key techniques, a move that delighted Rathman. “I still keep track of it because I know the teams that are good at it are the teams that usually win,” Rathman said, expressing pride in Sirianni’s ongoing commitment to the principles they instilled together.

The Eagles’ focus on turnover management proved beneficial in 2022, as they reached the Super Bowl with a plus-eight turnover differential. An analysis of the current 2023 season reveals a stark contrast; the team finished with a minus-10 turnover differential, the first negative margin for Sirianni in eight years. Despite this, the Eagles started the season strong at 10-1, showcasing a plus-two differential in their victories.

The impact of ball security cannot be overstated. With just four turnovers recorded in their first ten games of the season, the Eagles are on track for a record-setting year. Sirianni’s philosophy remains clear: “It’s always been about the ball.”

As the Eagles continue their campaign, the lessons imparted by Rathman resonate deeply within the organization, underscoring the critical nature of ball security in achieving long-term success. With a current record of 24-3 in their last 27 games, it seems that both Sirianni and Rathman’s methods have laid a strong foundation for the team’s future.
