Community Remembers Daniel C. Williams: A Life of Service and Love

Daniel C. Williams, a cherished member of the Grand Forks community in North Dakota, passed away on September 29, 2025, at Altru Hospital. He was 71 years old and surrounded by family at the time of his death. Williams was remembered as a vibrant individual whose life was marked by dedication, love, and a profound sense of service.
A Life Rooted in Service
Born on August 7, 1954, in Lewiston, Maine, to Albion and Katherine (Johnson) Williams, Dan’s early years laid the foundation for a life of commitment and camaraderie. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on September 25, 1972, where he dedicated over 23 years of his life to serving his country. Williams achieved the rank of Master Sergeant before his honorable discharge on March 1, 1996. His military career was characterized by both discipline and generosity, qualities that defined his personal relationships as well.
On June 7, 1976, Dan married his beloved wife, Karen Karner, in the scenic town of Solvang, California. Together, they navigated the challenges of military life, moving to various bases across the United States before finally settling in Grand Forks. Their home became a welcoming haven, filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
A Legacy of Love and Connection
Williams was known for his ability to make others feel valued, whether through shared laughter or a kind gesture. His passions included fishing, where he found tranquility casting lines at Devils Lake and along the shores of Florida’s Gulf Coast during the winter months, often accompanied by his siblings.
Above all, Dan took immense pride in his family. He is survived by his son, Ben Williams, and daughter-in-law, Savannah; his siblings, Kathleen Binette, Stephen Williams (Paula), Kristine Steiner, and Alan Williams (Leticia); as well as several nieces and nephews, including Stephanie Gardner, Shanti Argue, Bobby Williams, Matthew Williams, and Michael Sullivan. He also leaves behind his “adopted daughter,” Sharley Kurtz. His legacy is further enriched by the memories shared with those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; his parents, Albion and Katherine; and his brothers-in-law, Michael Steiner and Roland Binette.
A family-directed Celebration of Life is scheduled for December 13, 2025, at VFW Post 3817 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. The event will begin at 16:00 and will honor the life and contributions of Daniel C. Williams, reflecting the joy he brought to so many.
